Reunion Island has been renowned for production of high quality of rose-scented geranium oil, known as Bourbon cv geranium oil. Apart from Bourbon geranium oil, there are two other commercially available geranium oils as Egyptian and Chinese in world martet with relatively variation in chemical composition and quality. The Chinese geranium oil is known for higher cifronellol / geraniol ratio (3-4 I) as compared with the ratio of 1:1 in Bourbon and Egyptian oils. Al present, the production of geranium oil in the country is much less than the internal demand necessitating import of the oil every year. The best quality of oil is used in high grade perfumes and flavours. On the other hand, the low quality oil is used for perfuming in creams, soaps and toiletries.
