The juice of the leaves possesses diaphoretic, anti periodic, stimulating and expectorant properties; it is used in catarrh and bronchitis. VASAKA: The shrub is the source of the drug, vasaka the well known in indigenous systems of medicine for its beneficial effects, particularly in bronchitis. The leaves, flowers, fruits and roots are extensively used for treating cold, cough, whooping cough, chronic bronchitis and asthma. It acts as a sedative-expectorant, antispasmodic and anathematic. It suppresses the secretions from bronchial walls. KANTAKARI : Solasonine is present in the fruits. The plant is employed for cough, asthma and pains in the chest. A very active drug to treat cough.. Especially in dry cough. TALISHA PATRA : specially used in tamaka shwasa i.e asthma for the relaxation of the bronchial spasm to some extent. Also very good expectorant. PIPPALI : Its principal constituents are piperine and piplartine The fruits are used for diseases of the respiratory tract, viz. cough, bronchitis, asthma, etc.; as counter-irritant and analgesic. It is kapha vilayaka i.e facilitates easy passage of phlegm through the bronchial tree. It pacifies the irritation in the throat and relieves dry cough. SHUNTHI: Ginger is reported to contain an anti-histaminic factor. So in any type of cough it can be effectively taken and soothes the throat. HARIDRA : Oil of haridra , distilled from the dried rhizomes, has feeble antiseptic properties. It is an antacid, and, in small doses, acts as a carminative, stomachache, appetizer and tonic. In large doses, however, it appears to act as an antispasmodic inhibiting excessive peristaltic movements of the intestines also in bronchial spasms. Turmeric also possesses antiinflammatory properties.
