The Cymbopogon tlexuosus is popularly known as East Indian lemongrass. It is indigenous to India and is found both from wild and cultivated situation. Lemon grass is the general name for grasses whose leaves emit a throng lemon scent when crushed. There are two main types of lemongrass, namely East Indian and West Indian. The East Indian lemongrass oil is obtained from Cymbopogon flexuosus and is the genuine oil of commercial importance whereas the oil from C. citmius is designated as West - Indian lemongrass oil’. This species (Cymbopogon tlexuosus) is considered to have originated from Kerala and southern state of India. The plant is very hardy and grows: under a vaety of conditions. The roost ideal conditions are a warm and humid ckmate with plenty of sunshine and a2rainfall of 250-260 cm ,per annum uniformly distributed. The west Indian lemon grass is obtained from Cymbopogon citrotus. North Indian or Jammu lemon 9rass is another source of lemon grass oil mainly restricted to northern India. C. llexuosus is indigenous to western Chats. It is also found to occur wifti in Sikitim and Arunaciial Pradesh. C. cilratus is cultivated in Argentina, Brazil, Guatemala, West Indies, Vietnam, Philippines and China as an introduction of wild lemon grass from Zaire.
