The liver is the largest glandular organ in the body, located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen. It performs maximum functions than any other human organ. A person's entire blood supply passes through the liver several times a day, and at any given time it holds about 13% of the body's blood supply. The Liver has a pivotal role in human metabolism. The liver is our body's greatest chemical factory. It perform the following functions: • Filters blood • Neutralizes toxins • Helps break down and recycle red blood cells • Stores iron, copper, vitamins A and D and several of the B vitamins • Makes important proteins, such as most of those involved in blood clotting • Makes bile (A substance that helps digest fat and excrete certain fatty substances) • Metabolizes many medications, such as barbiturates, sedatives and amphetamines • Builds complex molecules from simple substances absorbed from the digestive tract • Makes important proteins like albumin that regulate fluid transport in the blood and kidneys • Processes and hooks fats to carriers (including cholesterol) and stores sugars, helps the body transport and save energy However liver can be diseased. Liver disease is a term for a collection of conditions, diseases and infections that affect the cells, tissues, structures or functions of the liver. If the liver becomes inflamed or infected, its ability to perform the above functions may be impaired. Liver disease and infections are caused by a variety of conditions including viral infections, bacterial invasion, and chemical or physical changes within the body. The most common cause of liver damage is malnutrition, especially that which occurs with alcoholism and smoking.
